Kallu Fiesta at Silk Lantern: Experience an Authentic Kerala Toddy Shop in Jebel Ali, Dubai
Known for celebrating Asia’s storied culinary traditions, Silk Lantern is a Pan-Asian restaurant located in the leafy surroundings of Jebel Ali Recreation Club. Our culinary journey across the continent now brings us to the vibrant, coastal state of Kerala, South India.
There is a distinct, cherished nostalgia that resides along the winding roads of Kerala. It is found in the humble roadside Kallu Shaapu (toddy shops) welcoming sanctuaries where friends gather after work and families assemble around rustic wooden tables for generous, soul-warming food. Silk Lantern recreates this timeless tradition with Kallu Fiesta, an immersive ten-day culinary celebration.
An Authentic Kallu Shaapu Experience in Jebel Ali Village
Stepping into the Silk Lantern during Kallu Fiesta transports guests directly to the Malabar region. The venue features a freestanding, roof structure framed by poles, capturing the rustic charm of Kerala’s iconic roadside eateries.
Palm wine (toddy) drawn from coconut palms is poured ceremoniously from traditional clay pots. Head Chef Satheesh Sadanandan and the culinary team bring Kerala’s rich heritage to life through authentic regional dishes, while our mixologist complements the feast with bespoke signature drinks blending native kanthari chilli heat, refreshing pineapple with Tajin rims, and delicate lychee perfumed with rose water.
Grand Traditional Onam Sadhya
The festival culminates in a heartfelt Onam celebration, serving a grand vegetarian feast on a fresh banana leaf featuring over 20 authentic heritage recipes:
- Crispy Bites & Pickles: Crunchy banana chips, sweet sharkara varatti (jaggery chips), crisp pappadam, tangy lemon and mango pickles, spicy curd chilli, and zesty inji puli.
- Flavourful Curries & Accompaniments: Traditional sides including aviyal, thoran, olan, kalan, koottucurry, pineapple pachadi, and vibrant beetroot kichadi.
- Mains & Essentials: Steaming Kerala matta rice topped with parippu curry and fragrant ghee, paired with slow-simmered sambhar, soothing rasam, refreshing pachamoru, and fresh pazham.
- Sweet Finales: Two indulgent desserts: classic lentil-jaggery Parippu Payasam and creamy Palada Payasam.
Priced at just AED 65 per person, it offers residents across Dubai an authentic taste of home during Kerala’s most cherished harvest season.
